Community Involvement
Being involved in our community isn’t something we do, it’s simply who we are. Our hope is that as we are changed by the life and mission of Jesus, we’d be people that model these aspects in how we interact with our neighbors. God has given us an opportunity as we inhabit the downtown Vancouver area to both show and tell the message of the Gospel in every moment. Living this way, as followers of Jesus, can lead us to relational events and activities with our neighbors that invite more people to discover God through relationships with His people.
Throughout the year there are numerous ways to join the downtown neighborhoods in different activities to be both a relational presence and a tangible expression of God’s heart for people. Below are some activities we have been apart of over the past few years at which we invite you to join us.
By working with our friends and neighbors at local elementary schools, we are able to throw a free egg hunt with the community on the Saturday preceding Easter. Currently we’re partnering with Hough Elementary and other local businesses to make this a great relational gathering for families and those downtown.
Reading and sharing a laugh create good times for adults and children alike. This summer time reading event is a partnership between the Vancouver Parks and Rec summer camp and local residents to care for our neighborhood kids. Compass assists the camp by hosting a one hour reading time on Thursdays July-August here in our space. Come out and Rock the Story with us by reading with some great K-5th graders!
Compassion Vancouver is a collective of local churches working together to bring health and dental care to our community that does not have access to that type of care. Go to www.compassionvancouver.com for more info or to volunteer.
An amazing night of fun for families of Hough Elementary during the Christmas season. Children have the opportunity to purchase gifts for their family at a low cost to them, and friends from the community get to help make it happen by donating presents, running a craft area, or providing refreshments.
One of the best ways to live compassionately with your neighbors is by connecting with them at local schools to see what they’re doing to help people throughout the school year. Many of our public schools in Vancouver have a Community Resource Center to create a better foundation for student learning by coordinating resources for families. Please check them out if this is an area that God is calling you to serve in.
Neighbor Linkup is a great online tool brought to us by our friends at Go Connect which helps you discover and meet needs in your own community. Their mission is “Connecting Neighbors to Neighbors Through Opportunities of Compassion”. Log onto www.neighborlinkup.com/compass to see how easy it is to build relationships and meet tangible needs.
